Needs map to jump to where there's something to do

I understood what I should be doing and generally ran from place to place to do it, but when I got to the ale, I knew I needed to get ale, but I checked everywhere and couldn't figure it out. The game is all but hung at this point (and yes, I was playing with hints) because there's no way to request a clue. Having a map to speed repetitive movement and which flags which area has something to do in it would have solved this problem. I'd already solved everything else, including putting the dragon to sleep, but I can't get the tooth without ale.
